Weekly Photo Challenge: SUN

I almost gave up on this week’s photo challenge, but I stumbled upon this photo taken last winter on Gozo on the Maltese archipelago. It was taken with hubby’s Canon 450 and a winde angle lens. It will be a while though before I am ready to take photos as good as Jeff Sinon‘s. Thank you for your support Jeff ;) .

  1. Do you realise that if you zoom in far enough onto that shiny bit in the middle of the grass, you can just see a rainbow / sunbow ? Take a look :-)

Well aren’t you a sneaky, sneaky woman! I had no idea that I was helping you make a link to me, thank you! :-D I’m also supremely honored that you feel my photography is something to aspire to.

Now on to the photo. I knew you had it in you! Great foreground(looks like the stone walls we have a gazillion of in New England), you’ve got some people in there for scale, and you have the rock formation of in the distance. I have a few suggestions, but I don’t want to overstep my bounds, or worse yet offend you, so I’ll let you decide if you would like to hear them. Rest assured they are minor, one is purely personal preference, but mostly know that I REALLY like the photo and I’m glad you were able to come up with something this week. I’d be happy to have made that photo myself!

One last thought, I assume you are the one who created the photograph you use for your banner image? If so, you really have to look no further than your own photos for great images!

:) Hi Jeff. Of course I want to hear your criticism … go ahead. As for the banner image… I borrowed hubby’s camera (I had canon ixus at the time) and his settings and I also picked his brain :D . I wish I was sneaky though :D My life would be a lot easier. Bless you!

      • Jeff Sinon says:

Okay, here goes, the sun is a little too centered in the frame for my taste. I would also crop out that white thing on the right edge, about a third of the way up. Cropping that out will also move the sun out of the center of the frame, double bonus. That’s it, like I said, very minor stuff.

As for the banner image, YOU are still the one to frame it and press the shutter. It was your eye that saw it as a good photograph.

And as far as picking your husband’s brain, that’s what we are good for. At least that is what I keep trying to convince my wife :-D

    • Paula says:

These are good suggestions Jeff, especially getting rid of the white thing.. I don’t mind the Sun being in the centre though…

      • Jeff Sinon says:

Funny you should say that about the sun. I was looking at a recent photo of mine that got a lot of great feedback, it’s actually the cover image for my Facebook page, http://www.facebook.com/JeffSinonPhoto, and before you even look at it, would you like to guess where the sun is in the frame? You guessed it, right smack in the middle! Upper third of the frame at least, like yours, but other than that dead center. I guess I don’t really know what the heck I’m talking about after all :-D

    • Paula says:

Hi again Jeff :) I still can’t reply to your recent comments just to this one :S.
Well, I have seen your fb link and there is nothing wrong with having the sun in the centre I believe, but I am only going by my feeling and do not read many photography books. I am sure you know what you are talking about. Hey, it is great to meet someone as honest and self-critical as you are.. I’ll tell you the secret – I am the same way :D .
Another thing, I am glad you are using wordpress cause I don’t really like fb ;) . Do you have a pic ready for the next photo challenge? I have one from Italy from some years back and I will post it next week.

      • Jeff Sinon says:

Seems strange that you can only reply here. Might be a setting on your end, but I really couldn’t say. I just looked at my blogs dashboard and don’t see anything. If you don’t want to keep replying to the same thread with a completely unrelated question or comment, you can always use the “Contact” tab at the top of my page. That would also probably be the most beneficial to other readers. That way they don’t have to read anything that isn’t really related to the original post. But if it is easier for you to continue this way, I’m fine with that too.

To be honest, if you had told me 3 years ago that I would have a FB fan page, or write a blog for that matter, I would have very strongly suggested you have your head examined. The fact that I enjoy the blog as much as I do still kind of surprises me. I will admit that my entire social media presence is for purely selfish reasons. Since I decided to make my photography more than just a hobby, getting my name and images in front of as many potential buyers as possible was the true motivation behind my facebook page in particular. Every FB friend of every person who “likes” my page is someone who at the very least might see one of my photos, and under the best circumstance might make a purchase from my website.

Since I have been writing the blog and gaining more followers, I have discovered an entirely new reason for my online presence, the blog in particular. People actually asking for my help with their photography. Me, who the hell am I that someone would want, let alone ask for, my help? I don’t get it, but I’ll take it! :-D Let me tell you, that does wonderful things to my ego. But I love being able to help where I can. I just wish I was a little more tech savvy and a better teacher.

      • Jeff Sinon says:

Oh yea, you are right about the sun. I was just thinking about the whole “rule of thirds.” But rules are made to be broken when it comes to photography in my opinion!

        • Paula says:

Hi there Jeff… another mystery is resolved :D . I got a tip how to increase allowed levels of replying and it should work from now on…at least up to level 10. Thank you for staying tuned :)
